Overview

Mission

The TP-LTT Centre was jointly set up by Temasek Polytechnic (TP) and Lufthansa Technical Training (LTT) in 2007 to provide premium aerospace training for students from the Diploma in Aerospace Engineering and Diploma in Aerospace Electronics offered by our School of Engineering.  Ultimately, we aim to produce Aerospace diploma holders who are better trained, better qualified, better recognised, and with better career prospects than those from other Polytechnics.

About the Centre

The TP-LTT Centre provides premium aerospace training to students and offers the following advantages:

  • One of Singapore’s newest fully-equipped Aerospace training centres
  • Location on the TP campus provides easy access for Aerospace students
  • Offers practical training that meets the new SAR-66 standards set by the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS)
  • Supports the two Aerospace diploma programmes offered by Temasek Polytechnic, which is the only institute of higher learning in Singapore to have been certified by the CAAS as an Approved Aircraft Maintenance Organisation (AMTO)
  • Wide global recognition supported by the Lufthansa brand name
  • Expert aerospace instructors trained by Lufthansa Technical Training (LTT), Germany

Core Technology

The TP-LTT Centre provides dedicated training for aerospace diploma students in TP, as well as adult learners from the aerospace sector who wish to upgrade their skills and qualifications.  The Centre has equipment and facilities to provide training in areas such as composite materials, fuselage, electronics / avionics, engine control & instrumentations, aircraft structures & flight control, aircraft test & measurement, and fluid mechanics, among others.

Projects

Aerospace students do various projects related to the design, repair and application of various composite materials and fabrication and testing of components related to aircraft, among others.  Here are some examples:

Industry Partners

Lufthansa-Technical Training (LTT), Germany

LTT is the aircraft maintenance training arm of German airlines Lufthansa and our key industry partner.  Under a landmark cooperation agreement signed between Temasek Polytechnic (TP) and LTT in 2007, the two institutions would jointly offer a specialised aerospace training programme at the fully equipped TP-LTT Centre on campus, for our students from the Diploma in Aerospace Engineering and Diploma in Aerospace Electronics.  Courses are also offered to adult learners from the aerospace sector who wish to upgrade their skills and qualifications under a continual education training scheme, subsidised by the Singapore Workforce Development Agency (WDA).

The cooperation agreement was signed by the Principal and CEO of Temasek Polytechnic, Mr Boo Kheng Hua and the Managing Director of LTT, Mr Christoph Meyerrose, on 19 Oct 2007.

The TP-LTT Centre was officially opened on 27 Mar 2008, by the Managing Director of the Singapore Economic Development Board Mr Ko Kheng Hua, LTT’s Managing Director Mr Christoph Meyerrose, and Germany’s Ambassador to Singapore Mr Folkmar Stoecker.

Since then, aerospace students in TP have been using the TP-LTT Centre conveniently located on campus, and they are trained by expert instructors certified by LTT, Germany.

Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS)

Both TP and LTT have worked closely with the CAAS in ensuring that the aerospace training programme offered to Aerospace students in TP meets the stringent Singapore Air Worthiness (SAR-66) requirements set by of the CAAS.  TP is also the first and only institution of higher learning in Singapore to have achieved the prestigious SAR-147 Approved Maintenance Training Organisation (AMTO) certification from the CAAS.  This certification ensures that certain training standards have been met and specific modules have been covered, so that Aerospace diploma holders from TP will be able to complete their subsequent professional Aircraft Maintenance Licence (AML) apprenticeship 10 months sooner than their peers from other Polytechnics.

Media Publications

Women in Aerospace

Aerospace Singapore, a publication of the Association of Aerospace Industries Singapore (AAIS), featured two of our promising female Aerospace students as part of its special edition focusing on Women in Aerospace (Vol.2, No.4, 2009).  The two students, Ong Hwee Yee and Eileen Yeo, both expressed their conviction that women could do as well as, if not better than, men in the male-dominated aerospace sector.

Aviation Education

The Centre was highlighted in a special feature of The Straits Times (16 Mar 2011) as one of the prominent institutions in Singapore which offers aviation and aerospace training for both full-time students and working adults.  It was also mentioned that TP had been appointed by the Workforce Development Agency (WDA) as a Continuing Education Training Centre to deliver the professional certificate in aerospace engineering to part-time students.

Launch of TP-LTT Centre

The collaboration between Temasek Polytechnic (TP) and Lufthansa Technical Training (LTT) of Germany, as well as the launch of the TP-LTT Centre, was reported in The Straits Times (31 Oct 2011).  Aerospace training would be conducted by LTT instructors from Germany and TP lecturers who were trained and certified by LTT.  The Centre would provide skilled professionals to meet the manpower needs of Singapore’s booming aerospace sector.

A Journey to Aerospace Success

This article in The Leading Edge (Issue 03, 2013), a publication of the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS), charts TP’s long and eventful journey to becoming a successful aerospace training provider in Singapore, from its humble beginnings when TP first offered aerospace training as an “Option”, before starting with full time aerospace diploma courses in 2009, to the establishment of the TP-LTT Centre in 2007.  TP’s aerospace success culminated in the 2012 when it was certified by the CAAS as an “Approved Maintenance Training Organisation” (AMTO) – the only institution of higher learning in Singapore to have obtained this honour.
