Subject Synopses
Animals and Birds Act Regulations
This topic will introduce participants to the legislations governing the import and export of animals, including CITES, animal welfare, the responsibility of pet shop owners, and the conditions for granting pet shop licenses. It will also cover legislation on the sale of medicines and medications in the local context.
Animal Care and Management
Participants will be introduced to the daily care of freshwater and marine systems, general health signs, fish nutrition and types of feed and storage conditions, handling and restraint, behaviour and emergency preparedness, as well as common diseases and the treatment and control of the spread of diseases.
Animal Health and Diseases
This topic will cover general health signs, recognition and treatment of common diseases. Diagnostic methods such as simple skin scrapes and submission of biological samples to the laboratory will be discussed.
Animal Housing
Principles of aquarium setup for fresh water and marine systems, with the monitoring of water quality conditions in freshwater and seawater, will be covered in this topic. Concepts of quarantine and disinfection will also be introduced. Aquarium maintenance will also be covered.
Occupational Health and Safety
This topic provides an introduction to the biological, physical and chemical aspects of occupational safety, with emphasis on zoonoses, personal hygiene practices and personnel vaccination.
Business Ethics and Management
Participants will be introduced to the broad concepts of setting up a business, rules and ethics governing businesses, consumer rights and good business management.
Client Education
This topic will introduce the participants to responsible pet ownership, and the role pet shops can play in fostering good pet ownership in the local context.
Workshop
The workshop will demonstrate on the techniques of chemical restraint and practical handling of fish, as well as monitoring of the aquatic environmental conditions.
Certification
Participants who meet at least 75% of attendance requirements, passed assessments and complete the workshop will be awarded the Certificate of Accomplishment.
