Course Overview

Do you own or work in an aquarium/pet shop with fish? Ever wondered whether fish can feel pain, or whether you are doing the right things for your fish? Do you know the rules and regulations for aquariums/pet shops and do you have a workplace safety plan in place? We have created a workshop just for you. Come join our team of expert facilitators to learn the rules and regulations governing your business, business management, workplace safety, fish care & management and how to recognise healthy and diseased fish. This certified short course aims to elevate standards and competencies of the retail ornamental fish sector.

Subject Synopses

Animals and Birds Act Regulations

This topic will introduce participants to the legislations governing the import and export of animals, including CITES, animal welfare, the responsibility of pet shop owners, and the conditions for granting pet shop licenses. It will also cover legislation on the sale of medicines and medications in the local context.

Animal Care and Management

Participants will be introduced to the daily care of freshwater and marine systems, general health signs, fish nutrition and types of feed and storage conditions, handling and restraint, behaviour and emergency preparedness, as well as common diseases and the treatment and control of the spread of diseases.

Animal Health and Diseases

This topic will cover general health signs, recognition and treatment of common diseases. Diagnostic methods such as simple skin scrapes and submission of biological samples to the laboratory will be discussed.

Animal Housing

Principles of aquarium setup for fresh water and marine systems, with the monitoring of water quality conditions in freshwater and seawater, will be covered in this topic. Concepts of quarantine and disinfection will also be introduced. Aquarium maintenance will also be covered.

Occupational Health and Safety

This topic provides an introduction to the biological, physical and chemical aspects of occupational safety, with emphasis on zoonoses, personal hygiene practices and personnel vaccination.

Business Ethics and Management

Participants will be introduced to the broad concepts of setting up a business, rules and ethics governing businesses, consumer rights and good business management.

Client Education

This topic will introduce the participants to responsible pet ownership, and the role pet shops can play in fostering good pet ownership in the local context.

Workshop

The workshop will demonstrate on the techniques of chemical restraint and practical handling of fish, as well as monitoring of the aquatic environmental conditions.

Certification

Participants who meet at least 75% of attendance requirements, passed assessments and complete the workshop will be awarded the Certificate of Accomplishment.

Sara has more than 26 years of experience in the field of Medical and Applied Microbiology. He has led the research team in Technology development, School of Applied Science, on development of point-of-need diagnostics for screening of environmental, food and aquaculture diseases and rapid pathogen identification. His team is currently working on oral vaccines for fish and crustaceans to protect against infectious diseases, and also, reduce the use of antibiotics in farm settings. He has secured over 3.5 million grant from external agencies to build capability in disease diagnostics and prevention and control measures. His current focus areas include Aquatic animal health, feed additives, probiotics, oral vaccines, and underwater behavioural monitoring of farmed fish and shrimps.

Mr Oliver Chang

Master of Science (Life Science); Nanyang Technological University, Singapore

Bachelor of Science (Second Class Hons) in Biomedical Science (Cellular and Molecular Pathology); University of Bradford, UK

Oliver's main research and interests focus on intertidal ecology, particularly in examining the ecological relationships of marine organisms’ populations as well as conservation. His Master’s Degree was in the ecological survey of marine organisms found on the seawall of Singapore and the southern islands. In 2014, he presented his intertidal study of coral community structure at different shore distances at the Biodiversity Symposium organized by NParks. Extending on this area of interest, Oliver commenced a study on the spatial and temporal distribution of adult male and female T. gigas on Coney Island and Pulau Ubin in 2017-2018 under a research grant offered by Marine Science Research Development Program.

Mr Glendon Teo

Hons. Degree in Life Science (Biology) NUS

Glendon has worked in a number of aquaculture institutes, including the Tropical Marine Science Institute (TMSI) and S.E.A Aquarium. He has also spent time at various farms and aquaculture labs and learning facilities in Thailand, Japan, the Philippines and Malaysia. He specializes in ornamental fish breeding and husbandry, marine and freshwater Recirculatory Aquaculture Systems (RAS) and phytoplankton and zooplankton cultures. He is currently working as a Research Executive at Temasek Polytechnic, conducting research mainly on biofloc/probiotic technology, mud crab and fish breeding as well as live feed enrichment. He teaches both full-time and part-time students in fish/invertebrate husbandry, aquaculture systems and farming techniques for both outdoor and indoor high-tech farms.

Mr Wang Yong

Wang Yong has been teaching at Temasek Polytechnic for 10 years. Currently a Manager at the Centre for Communication Skills, School of Humanities & Social Sciences, Temasek Polytechnic.

Before joining Temasek Polytechnic, Wang Yong was an assistant manager with Singapore Mediation Centre (SMC), facilitating training workshops and mediating commercial disputes. He was also on the panel of Associate Mediators. Prior to coming to Singapore, he worked in a Chinese construction company, with responsibilities covering project management and risk control. He was deployed to Bangkok and Kuwait to participate in construction projects.
